Rayon Sports Beats Kenya’s Giants Gor Mahia, Secures Chance For Quarter Finals

Rayon Sports has secured its first victory in this year’s TOTAL CAF Confederation’s cup group games after sealing an away 2-1 win over Kenya’s giants Gor Mahia in Nairobi on Sunday.

Rayon Sports flew to defeat Gor Mahia 2-1 in their group D return game staged at Kasarani Stadium in Kenya.

Gor Mahia had got a 1-1 draw result in Kigali in their first leg match against Rayon.

Rayon Sports’ goals were scored by Bonfils Caleb Bimenyimana who netted the opener following a nice assist by Djabel Manishimwe only two minutes after the game kicked off.

The 2017 Rwandan league champions, who then stood in the third place with three points behind then first placed Gor with eight points, led the game until the 22nd minute when Burundian born forward Francis Mustapha equalized for the Kenyans to make it a 1-1 half time draw.

In the second half, Rayon Sports came on the ground pushing for a goal which they knew would increase their chances to seal a quarterfinal qualification, knowing well that a different result would have translated for them a direct elimination in the CAF Confederation Cup tournament this year.

The efforts by the Blue and White club paid off and saw them get the second goal in the 53th minute, and kept their net clean until the final whistle despite Gor Mahia’s pressure imposed on them for the rest minutes if the second half.

It would have been Rayon’s third goal in the 84th minute when Caleb Bimenyimana scored a goal which was refused by the referee alleging the Kenyans’ goalkeeper had been fouled.

The win saw Rayon Sports get six points placed third behind USM Alger who are second with eight points and Gor Mahia who are on top also with eight points.

Elsewhere in the group, USM Alger were stunned 1-2 by Young Africans who now sit in the bottom with four points, already eliminated from this year’s tournament.

Rayon Sports will face Tanzania’s Young Africans on August 28 in Kigali for their last group D game.

To qualify for the quarterfinals in the Confederation of the African Football (CAF) Confederation Cup which would be their first time in history, they are required to win and wait for the result of the game between USM Alger who will host Gor Mahia the same date.
