Former drug dealers and addicts in Kigoya Cell, Kanjongo Sector in Nyamasheke District have been praised for their awareness activities and sharing information in the campaign against drug dealers.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Innocent Gasasira, the Western Region Police spokesperson expressed the appreciation on July 14 after a successful operation against narcotic drugs.
About 400 litres of illicit brew were seized during the operation at Karambo trading centre and were disposed of before hundreds of residents.
Addressing residents shortly after destroying the narcotics, CIP Gasasira said the information given by former drug dealers and addicts; they get to know the sellers and stores of the drugs.
“These psychotropic substances were seized thanks to this group of reformed drug dealers and abusers who made it their duty to sensitize people on the dangers of drugs. Through this, we get information on dealers and stores from the people,” CIP Gasasira said.
The former drug dealers and abusers in Kigoya Cell formed an association called ‘Sisi Wenyewe’ with the aim of fighting drug abuse through awareness, and to improve safety and security of their community.
CIP Gasasira reminded the residents that Rwanda National Police and partnership with various community policing groups will continue with operations to ensure that anyone involved in such crimes is brought to justice.
He further advised residents to use their money into other legal and profitable business ventures, rather than engaging in such criminal businesses.
