Croatia and Argentina entered as favorites to advance, and that remains the case. Croatia didn’t put forth some dominant effort against Nigeria, but their workmanlike efforts proved to be just enough to secure all 3 points.
The Croatians got a gift in the first half when Nigerian Oghenekaro Etebo put one in the back of his own net before captain Luka Modric clinched the victory with a successful penalty in the 71st minute.
Argentina got out of the gates strong when Sergio Aguero bagged the first goal of their tournament in the 19th minute, only to see Iceland equalize just 4 minutes later through Alfred Finnbogason.
The Argentines applied all sorts of pressure throughout the rest of the match, but were ultimately unable to break through.
The most crucial moment of the game came when Messi had his penalty saved by Iceland keeper Hannes Halldorsson in the second half.
Despite racking up 27 shots compared to just 8 for Iceland, Argentina were left with a share of the spoils.
Now, Croatia find themselves in the driver’s seat in Group D heading into their head-to-head clash against the Argentines.
