Shortly before midnight of Tuesday, 19 June, an armed gang with rifles attacked Nyaruguru District in Nyabimata Sector, Nyabimata Cell in Rwerere Village.
The gang shot five people killing two, according to a Police report issued this morning.
“Those injured in the attack, including the executive secretary of Nyabimata, were rushed to Munini hospital where they are receiving medical care,” the report said.
It is reported that the assailants also set fire to a car belonging to the executive secretary, and unsuccessfully tried to break into Nyabimata Savings and Credit Cooperative.
The same gang attacked Rumenero trading centre, where they looted mainly foodstuff.
Police said the assailants had emerged from Nyungwe forest, Southern province, which borders Burundi, and fled in the same direction after the attack.
Security responded immediately and are currently in pursuit of the attackers.
Local leaders and security authorities convened a meeting with affected residents to restore calm and reassure them of their security.
“We call on the public to cooperate in sharing any information that may facilitate ongoing operations and investigations to bring to justice those behind this criminal act,” the Police said.
