Bee keeping in Nyamagabe district has become a valuable source of income and a major contributor to the economy.
Most bee keepers are collectively formed into cooperatives and engage in both bee keeping and processing honey which they supply to an ever thirsty market.
According to the National Agriculture Export Board (NAEB) these cooperatives are coordinated under the “Ubwiza bwa Nyungwe” a union of 13 beekeeping and processing honey cooperatives in Nyamagabe district.
Previously members of these cooperatives were only using traditional methods and practices of bee keeping and honey harvest and processing.
However, since members of this company opted to use modern beehives which boosted the union’s income by threefold compared to when they used traditional honey traps.
“They could harvest between three and five Metric Tonnes during 2012-2014 but recently in 2017 they got 15 Metric Tonnes of raw honey,” NAEB told Taarifa.
