Police Arrests Four Suspects For Trafficking “Weed”

Police in Rulindo District is holding four suspects who were arrested while allegedly trafficking 80kilograms of cannabis.

The narcotics were being trafficked in a vehicle, Toyota Collora plate number RAB 306N, which was also impounded.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the Police spokesperson for the Northern region, identified the suspects as Celestine Vuguziga, Claude Sebashitsi, Albert Ndahayo and Pascal Mutariyani.

According to CIP Twizeyimana, Police was tipped off that the vehicle was transporting cannabis, and a checkpoint was mounted in Gakenke town.

“The suspects were driving at night with lights off, it was in the dark at around 10pm. They refused to stop at a police checkpoint and sped off, which prompted a chase,” CIP Twizeyimana said.

“When they reach Rulindo, they branched off in Bushoki Sector but Police pursued them to where they were parked in Rulindo, checked the car and recovered a sack of cannabis weighting 80kgs. All the four suspects, who were on board were immediately taken into custoday,” said the spokesperson.

“The vehicle was impounded and handed over to Rwanda Investigation Bureau as well as the suspects.”

“There is a commendable partnership with the public, who provide information to inform our successful operations especially against drug trafficking,” said CIP Twizeyimana

Under Article 594 of the Penal Code, any person who unlawfully imports or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances is liable to a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of Rwf500, 000 to Rwf5 million
