Landslide Prompts Rwanda To Divert Trucks From Uganda

Due to continued landslides caused by heavy rains that are affecting the road from Gatuna – Gicumbi – Kigali, all heavy trucks to and from -Kigali via Gatuna are requested to temporarily use the Kagitumba route, the Rwanda National Police warned on Monday evening.

Earlier on Monday, the road was sliced half-way; with one part drifting away, prompting the Rwanda Traffic Police to divert trucks headed Uganda and those coming to Kigali, and advised them to use Kagitumba boarder.

Construction works kicked off right away. Traffic Police Spokesperson Supt. Jean Marie Vianney Ndushabandi told Taarifa late night that, “For now the road is closed for heavy trucks only.”

He however added that Police officers have been posted there “to monitor and facilitate movement on one lane.”

It said that road progressively tore apart until Traffic Police decided it was dangerous to allow heavy weight vehicles driving on the remaining lane.

The Police had earlier tweet that, “Please bear with the inconvenience as construction works begin.”

The Illustration bellow gives a rough illustration of the route.

It takes roughly 1:49 hours to drive to Kigali from Gatuna

Driving from Gatuna to Kigali alone can take slightly over 3:30 hours
