Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) has postponed hosting of the 2018 CECAFA Women Challenge Cup which was scheduled to be staged in Kigali City from May 12-22, 2018.
The decision to postpone the tournament was taken by FERWAFA Management on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, reads a statement by FERWAFA.
The reason behind the postponement of the tournament is due to the unavailability of hosting funds initially meant to be sent to Rwanda FA by the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA).
CECAFA had agreed to give Rwanda a sum of US$300,000 to organize preparations for the tournament.
With just a few days to the start of the tournament initially set for Saturday, May 12, 2018, FERWAFA has not received funds to host the tournament from CECAFA as agreed last month despite repeated correspondences and calls to CECAFA Secretariat requesting hosting funds to be availed to ensure the smooth organization of the tournament.
Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) will take a decision to host this tournament upon reception of hosting funds. At that time, both FERWAFA and CECAFA will sit to decide on the suitable dates when this tournament will be staged.
The Rwanda National Women Football Team which has been in residential camp since last week will break off their training session and focus on their club engagements in the Women Football League which will also resume with immediate effect.
