A Rwandan lawyer, Donat Mutunzi, was on Monday found dead in police custody at Ndera, a surbub in Kigali city.
Sources say he hanged himself using his sheets.
Mutunzi once took part in the case of Leon Mugesera currently serving prison sentence for his role in the 1994 genocide against Tutsi.
Rwanda Investigation Bureau’s Spokesperson (RIB) Modeste Mbabazi, confirmed his death to local press saying that,“ the deceased took his life by hanging inside the police custody.”
Donat Mutunzi had been taken in the police custody in the night of April 19 for alleged involvement in indecent assault case.
His body was immediately taken to the hospital for the postmortem.
His family reported that they last saw him on April 3, 2018 when he drove to take children to school.
Afterwards, they waited for him, but he did not turn up.
Valentine Ugirimpuhwe, Mukunzi’s wife, said that they then called his mobile phone number and went through, but was switched off later.
It was until Friday last week that an unknown person finally picked the call and told her not to worry because her husband was safe.
Valentine Ugirimpuhwe told Igihe that she was informed of her husband’s death today on Monday in the morning when he called Ndera Police Station.
