Dozens of commonwealth countries have flown their teams to Australia to take part in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. The same games have been celebrated since 1930.
Prince Charles delivered a speech composed by the Queen to the Gold Coast’s Carrara Stadium as he declared the 21st Commonwealth Games open after a ceremony that began with an almighty storm and concluded with a spectacular firework display.
Today Flag bearers representing their countries, matched into Carrara Stadium for the Opening Ceremony Parade Of Nations.
A flag bearer is selected because of their extraordinary achievements.
At GC2018, 39 flag bearers are male, 32 are female and Athletics is the most-represented sport, with 24 flag bearers competing in Athletics.
Meanwhile, there are 18 African countries in the action featuring 18 sports competing for a total of 2,725 medals.
A total of 6,600 athletes and team officials, media from around the Commonwealth are camped at the Commonwealth Games Village seating on 29 hectares, including seven hectares of open parklands, the Village features 18 new buildings; housing 1,252 dwellings – that’s 1,170 apartments and 82 townhouses.
