Kagame ‘Telephoned’ Ethiopian New PM

President Kagame has congratulated the new Ethiopian Prime Minister, Dr. Abiy Ahmed upon his election.

Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) voted Dr. Ahmed as new prime minister following the resignation of his predecessor, Hailemariam Desalegn, last month.

“[I] made a telephone call with Dr. Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia to congratulate him and through him entire EPRDF as well as people of Ethiopia for selecting him as able compromise PM yet to be confirmed by parliament soon,” Kagame said in a tweet yesterday evening.

He also added that, “As chairman of the AU on behalf of other African leaders wanted to express our solidarity with the Ethiopian people & their leaders as they continue to find from within and among themselves solutions to the recent political problems they faced.”

Kagame said that he is “looking very much forward to having Ethiopia continue to play its historical central role effectively and soon on our continent.”

Abiye Ahmed an ethnic Oromo will lead Ethiopia after the ruling coalition voted him to the sensitive office of Prime Minister.

The state-run channel said the 180-member council of the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) chose Abiye to succeed Hailemariam Desalegn as the chairperson of the coalition, meaning he automatically became premier.

Hailemariam Desalegn resigned from PM office last month.

“In today’s session, the council held a vote and elected Abiye Ahmed as chairperson,” said the EBC presenter, without giving further details.

State-affiliated outlets said Abiye won over 60% of all votes in the council.

Abiye, who hails from the Oromo ethnic group, will take over the government of Africa’s second most populous country.
