Thousands Of Burundian Refugees Run To Rwanda From DRC

Close to 3,000 Burundian refugees have left their camp in Kamanyola DRC and are on their way to Rwanda. Media reports say the refugees fear the “Congolese government was planning to forcefully repatriate them back to Burundi.”

Last year at least 30 Burundian refugees from Kamanyola died in clashes with Congolese security forces over plans to send some of them home.

Rwandan authorities told local media that they are “working closely with UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to find a transit stay in Rwanda.” Already some of them are being housed at the Nyarushishi transit camp.

This incident is taking place at the backdrop of recent contradictory events where critics portrayed Rwanda as unsafe for refugees and migrants.
