Officers of the Rwanda Correctional Services gunned down an inmate identified as Nsengiyumva Jotham after he had successfully escaped from Nyanza prison in southern province.
According to the Rwanda Correctional Services (RCS) Spokesperson, CIP Hillary Sengabo, inmate Nsengiyumva had scaled over the prison wall fence and was spotted running but was later shot and died on spot.
Nsengiyumva’s lifeless body was found with a sharp knife. The incidence happened on Sunday evening at about 7pm.
“RCS sadly announces the death of Nsengiyumva Jotham who was shot as he attempted to escape. He was serving a life sentence,” CIP Sengabo said.
In March 2015, Nsengiyumva and 14 accomplices were sentenced to life in prison after they were found guilty of treason, illegal transport and possession of fire arms, complicity in terrorist acts, murder and aggravated assaults, among other charges.
Specifically before his arrest and sentence, Nsengiyumva had undergone training in FDLR camps in DR Congo in 2011. He was tasked with mobilising new recruits for FDLR and coordinating terror attacks.
