Police in Kigali is holding a 33-year old man after he was caught red-handed with counterfeit Euros amounting to 500.
The suspect was arrested at Nyabugogo bus terminal, acting on information shared by a forex bureau agent, according to Senior Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali.
“He was at the time trying to exchange ten fake notes in the denominations of 50 Euros into local currency, but the forex bureau attendant noticed that the money was not genuine, and they called the Police, who arrested the suspect before leaving the scene,” said SSP Hitayezu.
Most fake currencies were in Rwf2000, Rwf5000, $100 and 50 Euros.
The spokesperson said that Rwanda National Police (RNP) has intensified operations against financial crimes including counterfeit currency and circulation.
At least 38 cases related to currency counterfeit have been arrested in Kigali between October and December, last year, although majority implicated in these cases were arrested and prosecuted, according to Police.
SSP Hitayezu called for vigilance against such fraudsters and timely information sharing whenever they see or suspect someone with or involved in counterfeiting and circulating currencies.
