The Rwanda National Football Team Amavubi beat Equatorial Guinea 1-0 in their second Group C match of the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2018 in Morocco.
Amavubi’s lone goal was scored by Rayon Sports’ defender Thierry Manzi in the 67 minutes. Manzi was voted Man of the Match.
Rwanda drew goalless with Nigeria’s Super Eagles in their first group game on January 15, 2018 in a game that Rwanda’s midfielder Jihad Bizimana was voted man of the match.
In the other Group C match, Nigeria’s Super Eagles beat Libya’s Mediterranean Knights 1-0 to lead the standing Group C table as they have four points same as Rwanda’s Amavubi while Libya are third placed with three points with Nzalang National of Equatorial Guinea sitting in the bottom without a point with four goals conceded.
Amavubi will play their last group game against Libya on January 23. A draw against the Mediterranean Knights will be enough for Antoine Hey’s men to secure a semifinal qualification in CHAN 2016, a competition initiated by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in 2009 reserved for African professional footballers playing in domestic leagues.
Total CHAN 2016 tournament is being played for the fifth time as Rwanda’s Amavubi participate in the competition for the third time after they were eliminated at group stage in 2011 in Sudan and in 2016 when they were knocked out in the semifinals by DRC who won the cup, Rwanda being the host nation.
