Active mobile telephone subscriptions (90-days revenue generating subscribers) in Rwanda have increased from 8,368,432 at the end of June, 2017 to 8,497,462 at the end of July, 2017, thereby showing an increase of 2.1%.
The Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) released the figures saying that penetration rate increased by 1.5% from 72.6% to 74%.
Postpaid subscription also increased from 121,195 at the end of June, 2017 to 124,714 at the end of July-2017.
Prepaid subscriptions increased from 8,247,237 at the end of June-2017 to 8,372,748 as of July-2017.
Tigo Rwanda made the largest gains in the month of July 2017 with subscriber numbers growing by 2.9% when compared to June 2017 subscriber figures.
Due to the gains in subscribers, Tigo Rwanda now enjoys market share of 39.5%, up from 36.5% in December 2016.
MTN Rwanda maintains the market lead with 42% while Airtel Rwanda remains the third with 19%.
Tigo Rwanda CEO, Philip Amoateng, said in a press statement that Tigo’s positive subscriber growth is a testament to not only the growth of customer confidence in the quality of the services the company offers, “but also the highly motivated sales and distribution team that we have on the ground. We are working towards becoming the market leader by the end of 2017.”
Tigo credits its growth on data and Tigo Cash mobile financial services.
Meanwhile, the subscriber percentage growth in general for 2017 since January has grown by 2.5% from 8,289,450 at the end of January, 2017 to 8,497,462 at the end of July, 2017; representing 208,012.
