Rayon Sports have beaten Police FC one goal to null in a game that had been postponed due to the death of Rayon Sports deputy coach Hamad ‘Katauti’ Ndikumana.
The national league defending champions, Rayon Sports had last played on November 19, 2017 a game in which they were held by Mukura Victory Sports to a goalless draw. They were coached by Marcel Lomami who is usually their physical coach.
From that day, Rayon Sports appealed Rwanda’s Football Federation (FERWAFA) to postpone their league games due to problems they said “had touched their players’ minds, that “would affect their performances’.
First, their deputy coach Hamad Ndikumana ‘Katauti’ passed away in the night of November 13, 2017 and he was buried on the following day, a day their head coach Olivier Karekezi was arrested for crimes “committed using internet”, though this has not been officially confirmed till he was released on December 3, 2017.
Their players Yannick Mukunzi and Eric Rutanga with the kit manager were brought in interrogation for their coach Karekezi’s dossier.
In the Azam Rwanda Premier League game they were hosted by Police FC at Kicukiro Playground today December 14, 2017, Rayon Sports who were coached by head coach Olivier Karekezi- played without their Burundian players, vice captain Pierre Kwizera and Shassir Nahimana who represent their nation in CECAFA 2017 in Kenya.
Rayon Sports’ players, Jabel Manishimwe and Olivier ‘Sef’ Niyonzima were injured during the physical game to be replaced by Saddam Nyandwi and Gilbert Mugisha respectively.
Rayon missed a penalty kicked by Yannick Mukunzi two minutes before half time pause.
After the Malian striker Tidiane Kone with Burundian winger Caleb Bon Fils Bimenyimana had been unable to win chances they got in front of Police’s goal posts, coach Olivier Karekezi opted to take Kone off the pitch to replace him with Eric Gisa Irambona in the second half.
The changes paid off for the blue and white side as Eric Irambona scored a goal for them in the 63rd minute to give his team a lead over Innocent Seninga’s men until the final whistle.
The win of Rayon Sports took them from the 11th place to move to fifth with 11 points having played two games less than AS Kigali who are now top of table with 16 points.
