Police in Karongi District is holding two men, who were caught attempting to give a bribe to a Police officer to release a suspect, who had been arrested and under investigation over abuse of office and embezzlement.
Joel Niyizubuhungiro, 35, and Emmanuel Ntawuyirusha, 47, were arrested on November 23 while giving a bribe of Rwf150, 000.
Inspector of Police (IP) Eulade Gakwaya, the Police spokesperson for the Western region, said that on November 18, one Malachie Nzarora, who is in charge of social affairs in Kaburunga Cell of Bwishyura Sector, was arrested for allegedly stealing organic fertilizers meant for the residents.
“Niyizubuhungiro and Ntawuyirusha went and got Rwf150, 000 from Nzarora’s family to bribe the officer handling the case, to drop the charges and release him,” IP Gakwaya said.
“The two men approached another person they thought would connect them to the officer in question, but their link was brave to report the hatched criminal act to Police, and that’s how they were arrested in action,” he added.
He commended the resident for standing up for the “truth and justice” and warned against such “criminal behavior.”
If found guilty, the suspects could face imprisonment of between five and seven years and a fine of between two to ten times the value of the illegal benefit offered.
